He is best known for his role as captain of the Santa María during Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the New World in 1492. De la Cosa also served as pilot on Columbus's second voyage and was part of the crew that explored Central America. In 1500 he made a map of the world which is considered to be one of the earliest European maps to show parts of North America. His map is also notable for being one of few surviving documents from that period that depict Native Americans living in what would become modern-day United States.
