EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Teresa de Filippis, the trailblazing Italian racing driver, strikes a pose beside her iconic Red Maserati 250F before the BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone. This print captures Maria's indomitable spirit and determination as she prepared to make history on that fateful day in May 1959. Maria, born on November 11th, 1926, etched her name in the annals of motorsport by becoming the first woman to ever compete in Formula One. Although her Formula One career was short-lived with no championship points scored during her five World Championship Grands Prix appearances, Maria's legacy extends far beyond those statistics. With grace and skill behind the wheel, Maria not only conquered hearts but also secured victories in other racing series throughout her remarkable career. Her unwavering passion for speed and competition made her a true pioneer in a male-dominated sport. Sadly, this particular race did not end as planned for Maria. After completing an impressive 40 laps around the demanding circuit at Silverstone, she was forced to retire due to a transmission problem. Nevertheless, this setback could never overshadow Maria's groundbreaking achievements or dampen her everlasting impact on women in motorsport. As we gaze upon this evocative image captured by Terry Fincher on May 2nd, 1959 - forever frozen in time - let us remember Maria Teresa de Filippis as an inspiration who shattered barriers and blazed trails for generations of female racers yet to come.
