EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history as the Maori rugby team, who had just played against Cardiff, were warmly welcomed by the esteemed Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Alderman C H McCale. The image showcases a distinguished group seated together, including Mr Percy Bush, who famously competed against New Zealand in 1905; Major R G Bertrand, responsible for leading the Maoris; and Lieutenant Colonel Idris Evans and Mr RA Cornish from the WRU. Standing between them is another member of the WRU. Research indicates that this encounter took place around June 1st, 1940 - a critical time when Italy was on the verge of entering World War II. It is remarkable to witness such camaraderie amidst global conflict during this period known as "the home front". The presence of these renowned athletes from New Zealand adds an element of sportsmanship and unity to an otherwise tumultuous era. The photograph serves as a testament to both Wales' deep appreciation for rugby and its commitment to fostering international relationships through sport. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, it reminds us not only of the power of athletic competition but also how moments like these can transcend borders and bring people together despite challenging circumstances.
