EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ongoing salvage work on the remnants of the munition ship Malakand, belonging to the Brocklebank Line. The image takes us back to one of the most terrifying moments during the heavy raids on Merseyside known as the May Blitz in 1941. In a tragic turn of events, a barrage balloon strayed into the ship's rigging during an attack by Luftwaffe, igniting a fire that attracted a relentless onslaught of incendiaries and high explosives. Amidst this chaos, incredible acts of heroism unfolded as crew members, dock workers, and Civil Defence personnel bravely fought to save both lives and property. Their selfless efforts were later recognized through official awards. However, despite their valiant attempts to scuttle her and extinguish the flames, tragedy struck when Malakand exploded with such force that its deafening sound reverberated throughout Merseyside. Astonishingly enough, pieces of its steelwork were discovered up to two and a half miles away from where it once stood. Liverpool endured numerous casualties during World War Two due to relentless bombings between August 28th, 1940 and January 10th, 1942. This poignant picture was taken on October 20th, 1943 - serving as a powerful reminder not only of Liverpool's resilience but also paying tribute to those who risked everything amidst unimaginable circumstances.
