EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the SS Vega, a remarkable Red Cross Hospital Ship, docked in the Channel Islands. The islands had endured occupation by the German military since June 1940 and were finally liberated on May 8th, 1945, along with the rest of Europe. The SS Vega played an instrumental role in bringing valuable supplies and food to the islanders during these challenging times. Owned by Stockholms Rederiaktieb Svea of Stockholm, a renowned steamship company established in 1886, this coal-fired vessel was launched in Gothenburg and delivered in April 1913. With its impressive capacity for storing coal that could sustain a sailing period of up to 16 days at a rate of 10.6 tons per day, it proved to be an invaluable asset. The SS Vega made several voyages to the occupied Channel Islands even before their liberation on May 9th, 1945. These courageous missions brought essential provisions such as flour and food parcels from Canada and New Zealand—deliveries that undoubtedly saved countless lives amidst dire circumstances. In this particular photograph taken around May 9th, we see the SS Vega moored alongside St Helier's Albert Pier in Jersey—a poignant moment marking the Island's freedom from occupation. Captain Wideberg and his crew received heartfelt presentations and gifts from local authorities as tokens of gratitude for their unwavering dedication to providing relief to those living under oppression. This image captured by Memory Lane Prints serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's resilience during times of adversity while honoring those who selflessly served others during one of history's darkest chapters.
