A memorial to Clevelands war heroes as been left to rack
A memorial to Clevelands war heroes as been left to rack and ruin at the hands of vandals, it has been claimed. In the year the country celebrates the 40th anniversary of V-E Day, Mrs Margaret Hart says something should be done to tidy up Normanby old School which bears a plaque in honour of local people who lost their lives in the First World War. The building was recently sold to a developer, and the roll of honour is to be removed and installed in St Georges Church, according to the developers trustees, the York Diocesan Board of Finance. 11th April 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
A solemn reminder of sacrifice and valor, this print captures the heartbreaking state of neglect that has befallen a memorial dedicated to Cleveland's war heroes. Vandals have left their destructive mark on Normanby old School, a once revered site bearing a plaque in honor of local lives lost during the First World War. As our nation commemorates the 40th anniversary of V-E Day, Mrs. Margaret Hart passionately calls for action to restore this poignant tribute. In an unfortunate turn of events, the building was recently sold to a developer who plans to remove the roll of honor and relocate it within St George's Church under the guidance of trustees from York Diocesan Board of Finance. The derelict condition in which it currently stands serves as a stark contrast to its former glory. This photograph transports us back to April 11th, 1985 when these distressing scenes were captured. It encapsulates not only the shattered windows but also symbolizes the crumbling remembrance and fading respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWI. While we cannot undo what has been done by vandals or prevent changes brought about by development plans, let us remember that photographs like this serve as powerful reminders urging us never to forget our history or forsake those who fought for our freedom.
