EDITORS COMMENTS
The 400-year-old antique Royal Oak Inn, nestled under the rustic shadow of the village church in Pillaton, holds a timeless charm that transports us back to a significant moment in history. This print captures the essence of camaraderie and resilience during World War II. In this poignant image, we witness the last parade of the "Fallin of the Pillaton G Platoon". Number 2 Company Home Guard comprised exclusively of farmers turned soldiers. It was on this fateful day, October 29th, 1944, that these brave volunteers gathered at their beloved inn for one final drink and chat before disbanding. As they stand proudly outside The Royal Oak Inn's historic walls adorned with antlers, their uniforms bear witness to their dedication and training. These courageous men were part of Britain's civil defense efforts on the home front during one of humanity's darkest chapters. The picturesque St. Odolphus Church tower looms behind them as a symbol of hope and faith amidst uncertain times. This quaint village setting in Cornwall serves as a reminder that even in rural communities far from major battlefields, ordinary people stepped up to protect their homeland. This evocative photograph by Lewis preserves not only a moment frozen in time but also pays homage to those who selflessly served during World War II. It serves as an enduring testament to bravery and unity against adversity.
