Rescue / Recovery Boat returns to dock, Donald Campbell, Coniston Water, Lancashire

Rescue / Recovery Boat returns to dock, Donald Campbell, Coniston Water, Lancashire, pictures taken on the day of his death, 4th January 1967.
Campbell was killed when Bluebird K7 flipped and disintegrated at a speed in excess of 300 mph (480 km/h)
Bluebird had completed a north-south run at an average of 297.6 mph (478.9 km/h), and a peak speed of 315 mph (507 km/h).
The second run was even faster; as K7 passed the start of the measured kilometre, she was travelling at over 320 mph (510 km/h).
However her stability had begun to break down and the front of the boat started to bounce out of the water on the starboard side. K7 lifted from the water at an ever increasing angle, before she took off at a 90-degree to the water surface.
She somersaulted and plunged back into the lake, nose first. The boat then cartwheeled across the water before coming to rest.
The impact broke Bluebird forward of the air intakes where Campbell was sitting, killing him instantly; the main hull sank shortly afterwards.
Donald Campbell remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964)

EDITORS COMMENTS
Rescue / Recovery Boat returns to dock, Donald Campbell, Coniston Water, Lancashire". This poignant print captures the somber moment when the Rescue/Recovery Boat returns to the dock at Coniston Water in Lancashire. It was taken on the fateful day of January 4th, 1967 - a day that forever changed the world of speed racing. Donald Campbell, a legendary figure in his field, tragically lost his life during an attempt to break yet another record. The iconic Bluebird K7 boat he piloted had reached incredible speeds exceeding 300 mph (480 km/h). Moments before disaster struck, Bluebird had completed a remarkable run at an average speed of 297.6 mph (478.9 km/h), with a peak speed reaching an astonishing 315 mph (507 km/h). However, as K7 pushed its limits and soared across Coniston Water's surface once more, tragedy unfolded. The boat's stability faltered and it began bouncing out of control on its starboard side. In a heart-stopping turn of events witnessed by those present that day, K7 lifted off from the water at an alarming angle before somersaulting and crashing nose-first into the lake. The impact proved fatal for Donald Campbell as Bluebird disintegrated upon impact. His untimely death marked not only the end of his extraordinary career but also left behind an enduring legacy as he remains the sole individual to have set both world land and water speed records within one year back in 1964. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of both triumphs and tragedies experienced by pioneers who dare to push boundaries in pursuit of their dreams.
