Volunteers seen here collecting the rubbish in Marylebone on the 10th day of the General
Volunteers seen here collecting the rubbish in Marylebone on the 10th day of the General Strike. Seen with the group is a special constable denoted by the striped armband. The barbed wire on the lorrys bonnet is to stop strikers tampering with the engine. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and a lock out, the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 12th May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the spirit of unity and resilience during the General Strike in Marylebone on the 10th day. Volunteers can be seen diligently collecting rubbish, determined to keep their community clean amidst the chaos caused by the strike. Amongst them stands a special constable, easily identifiable by his striped armband, symbolizing his role in maintaining order and security. The barbed wire adorning the lorry's bonnet serves as a poignant reminder of the tense atmosphere that permeated throughout this historic event. Its purpose was to deter any attempts by strikers to sabotage or tamper with essential transportation systems. The General Strike erupted after failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages and lockouts. Beginning on May 3rd, millions heeded the call for strike action, paralyzing transport networks while newspapers remained silent. In response, volunteers were enlisted to operate trains and buses, while troops were deployed to ensure vital supplies reached London docks safely. Unfortunately, clashes between police and protesters marred many areas during this tumultuous period. Over 4,000 strikers were arrested as attacks on buses and trains escalated dramatically – even resulting in derailing incidents such as that of the iconic Flying Scotsman. Ultimately, despite their valiant efforts, the TUC unilaterally called off the strike on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continued their fight until October when they faced a bitter defeat. This evocative photograph from Memory Lane Prints provides us with a glimpse into an important chapter in history when ordinary individuals stepped up as volunteers amid challenging circumstances.
