Soldiers parade on Horseguards Parade in London before patrolling the streets on the 10th
Soldiers parade on Horseguards Parade in London before patrolling the streets on the 10th day of the General Strike. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 12th May 1926

Soldiers Parade on Horseguards Parade in London, Ready to Defend During the General Strike of 1926
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in British history as soldiers stand tall and resolute on Horseguards Parade in London. It was the 10th day of the General Strike, a nationwide industrial dispute that shook the nation's core. The strike erupted after failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages, leading millions to heed the call for action. As transportation systems ground to a halt and newspapers ceased printing, chaos loomed over the country. In response, volunteers were recruited to operate trains and buses while troops were deployed to ensure vital supplies reached their destinations from London docks. However, tensions escalated with clashes between police and protesting crowds across various areas. The unrest resulted in numerous arrests of approximately 4,000 strikers. Buses and trains became targets of attacks, including an infamous incident where the Flying Scotsman was derailed. Despite its massive impact on society, this historic strike came to an abrupt end when it was unilaterally called off by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continued their fight until October. This powerful image serves as a reminder of both resilience and bitter defeat during one of Britain's most significant labor disputes in the early twentieth century.
