Commuters making their way to work near The Bank in the City of London
Commuters making their way to work near The Bank in the City of London, on the 8th day of the General Strike. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 11th May 1926

Commuters Battle Rain and Industrial Dispute in the Heart of London
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment frozen in time, depicting the bustling streets near The Bank in the City of London during the General Strike on May 8th, 1926. As millions heeded the strike call following failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages, chaos ensued throughout the city. Despite relentless rain pouring from ominous clouds above, determined men clad in raincoats and bowler hats trudge through flooded streets towards their workplaces. The image showcases a snapshot of resilience amidst adversity as these commuters navigate their way through a sea of umbrellas, horse-drawn carts, lorries, and fellow pedestrians. The impact of this national dispute is evident as transport systems grind to a halt while newspapers remain unprinted. In response to this disruption, volunteers take up roles operating trains and buses while troops are deployed to ensure vital supplies flow from London docks. However, tensions escalate with clashes between police forces and protesting crowds erupting across various areas. Attacks on buses and trains become commonplace; even iconic locomotives like the Flying Scotsman fall victim to sabotage with derailing attempts. Ultimately, despite its widespread support initially, the strike is unilaterally called off by TUC on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continue fighting until October when they face bitter defeat. This powerful photograph serves as an enduring reminder of an era marked by social unrest where ordinary individuals faced immense challenges just trying to make their way through life's daily struggles against both nature's fury and man-made disputes.
