Sinking of the ship Falaba, March 28th 1915.
The sinking of the " Falaba". Lurking menacingly in the background, as if to make sure it had finished the job, the U-boat that had torpedoed the passenger boat. The British liner " Falaba" was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the waters around Britain, an event important for two main reasons. Firstly, it marked the escalation of the U-boat campaign against shipping around the British coast. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, it caused the first official death of a US citizen. The man, Leon C. Thrasher, drowned after jumping from the sinking ship. His death caused outrage in the US, the government calling for " Strict accountability". Although the US had feared such an event for some time, it focussed attention onto the potential threat to their citizens abroad, a threat became far more real with the sinking of the liner the " Lusitania" a short while later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the tragic sinking of the ship Falaba on March 28th, 1915. In the foreground, we witness the devastating aftermath of this maritime disaster as survivors cling to debris in a desperate struggle for survival. However, it is the haunting presence lurking menacingly in the background that truly sends chills down one's spine - a German U-boat, seemingly ensuring its job was done. The significance of this event cannot be overstated. The torpedoing of the British liner Falaba marked a turning point in Germany's U-boat campaign against shipping around Britain's coast. Yet, it holds even greater importance due to an unfortunate consequence - Leon C. Thrasher became the first official US citizen to lose his life during World War I. Thrasher tragically drowned after bravely leaping from the sinking vessel. His death sent shockwaves across America and ignited outrage among its people. The government demanded strict accountability for this senseless loss of life and focused attention on potential threats faced by their citizens abroad. Little did they know that this tragedy would soon be overshadowed by an even more catastrophic event: the sinking of another liner, Lusitania. As we gaze upon this poignant image captured by Daily Mirror from Memory Lane Prints, let us remember those who perished aboard Falaba and reflect on how such events shaped history and influenced nations during one of humanity's darkest chapters at sea.
