Benny Hill - The Unconventional Comedian Who Captivated the World
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures Benny Hill in his element, dancing at the 1958 Variety Club party. Born on January 21,1924, in Southampton, England, Benny Hill's journey to stardom was as unconventional as it gets. At a young age of 14, he made his first stage appearance as a rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. By 15, he joined the semi-professional "Bobbys Concert Party" while also working as a Woolworths stockroom clerk and later a milkman. Determined to pursue his dreams further, at 17 he moved to London and slept rough on Streatham Common until finding work at Eat Ham Theatre as a props boy. His career took an unexpected turn when he joined the army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers despite lacking any qualifications. Post-war life led him to become Reg Varney's straight man after beating out Peter Sellers for the role. In 1951, Benny Hill debuted his own programme where he wrote scripts and composed music himself. However, BBC had doubts about its suitability due to its unique style of humor. In the sixties, Hill ventured into films but was eventually lured back to television by Thames (Lew Grade), leading to immense success with "The Benny Hill Show". Throughout his career spanning several decades, Benny Hill faced both accolades and controversy over his treatment of women being perceived as sexist and condescending. Despite this criticism from some quarters during the eighties in UK when humor became scorned locally but remained successful internationally—especially in America. A very private man who lived alone without ever marrying or showing interest in material gain or personal comfort; Benny Hill left an indelible mark on comedy history that continues to be celebrated today.
