EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determined young face of Albert Auerbach, a member of the 1st City of London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, during the summer of 1915. The image was taken at Peckham Rye in SE London, as Albert prepared to embark on his military service during World War I. Albert Auerbach was born in 1894 and, at the age of 21, was commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers on 20th July 1915. He is depicted here in his full regimental uniform, complete with the distinctive peaked cap adorned with a leather chinstrap. The leather belt and boots, along with the brass buttons and badges, add to the sense of military precision and discipline. The 1910s was a decade marked by great upheaval and change, and the onset of the First World War brought an unprecedented call to arms for young men across the United Kingdom. Albert Auerbach, like countless others, answered that call, leaving behind his civilian life to serve his country and defend the values of freedom and democracy. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals like Albert during the war years. It also highlights the camaraderie and sense of purpose that bound together the men of the Royal Fusiliers, who faced the challenges of the battlefield with courage and resilience.
