This exquisite pencil drawing captures the tender moment between two young brothers, Henry Warington Smyth Powell (b. 1847) and Augustus Smyth Powell (b. 1849), in the early 1850s. The brothers were the children of the Reverend Baden Powell (1813-1860) and his third wife Henrietta Smyth (1823-1878). The drawing was skillfully created by the renowned German artist Carl Hartmann (1818-1857). The Reverend Powell, a clergyman in Enfield, Middlesex, England, is best known for being the father of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout Movement in 1907. However, this heartwarming image showcases an earlier generation of the Powell family. In the drawing, Henry, the eldest brother, is depicted with a serious expression, while Augustus, the toddler, gazes up at his brother with a curious and graceful demeanor. The boys are dressed in Victorian attire, adding to the historical charm of the image. The artist, Carl Hartmann, was a talented painter and draftsman who studied under the renowned German painter, Moritz von Schwind.
