EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor illustration depicts the elusive Bay Thrush, Turdus ulietensis, also known as the Conjurer Bird or the Aplonis of the Pacific. The painting, annotated as Turdus badius by George Forster during Captain James Cook's second voyage to explore the southern continent between 1772 and 1775, is a rare and intriguing representation of this passerine bird. Forster, the lead naturalist on Cook's expedition, brought this artwork to public attention in Martin Davies' popular book. However, the original specimen, which was collected during Cook's expedition to Australia and the Pacific, mysteriously vanished. The painting is believed to have been created between 1754 and 1794 by Johann Georg Adam Forster, George Forster's father. The Bay Thrush, a member of the sauropsida family and the passeriformes order, is known for its distinctive appearance and intriguing behavior. Perched on a rocky outcrop, this bird appears to be gazing intently at the viewer, as if conjuring up tales of adventure and discovery from its past. The geomorphology of the landform in the background adds to the sense of exploration and wonder, making this illustration a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the 18th century.
