EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson: A Remarkable Australian Administrator and Musician" Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson (1834-1897) was an accomplished Australian administrator and musician, whose contributions to the development of the Australian colonies and the arts are still celebrated today. Born in England, Robinson arrived in Victoria, Australia, in 1854, and quickly made a name for himself as an efficient and fair-minded public servant. In 1861, Robinson was appointed as the Colonial Secretary of Victoria, a position he held for nine years. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the passage of several important legislations, including the Land Act of 1862, which facilitated the sale of Crown lands to settlers, and the Education Act of 1872, which established a system of free, compulsory education. Robinson's love for music was another facet of his multifaceted personality. He was an accomplished violinist and conductor, and in 1867, he founded the Melbourne Philharmonic Society, which later became the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Robinson also composed music, with his most famous work being "The Victorian Volunteers March," which was performed at the opening of the Melbourne Exhibition in 1880. Despite his many achievements, Robinson remained humble and dedicated to serving the people of Victoria. He retired from public life in 1870, but continued to support various charitable causes and musical endeavors. In recognition of his contributions to the colony, Robinson was knighted in 1888. This photograph captures Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson in later life, with a serious yet kind expression, reflecting the wisdom and experience gained from a lifetime of public service and artistic pursuits. The image serves as a reminder of the remarkable legacy of this Australian pioneer, whose influence on the development of Victoria can still be felt today.
