EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) - A Pivotal Figure in British History: Speaking in the House of Commons, January 1846 Sir Robert Peel, a prominent English statesman and Prime Minister, is depicted in this evocative sketch as he passionately addresses the House of Commons on a significant political issue in January 1846. Peel, born in 1788, was a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) who held strong views on Irish Catholicism and the ongoing debate between Free Trade and Protectionism. Although best known for organizing the London Police Force in 1829, which came to be known as "Peelers" or "Bobbies," his impact on British history extended far beyond law enforcement. Peel's political career was marked by his unwavering commitment to his beliefs. He was a vocal advocate for the repeal of the Corn Laws, a protectionist measure that imposed high tariffs on imported grain. His stance on Free Trade was a departure from the prevailing Conservative Party position and earned him both admirers and detractors. Despite his controversial views, Peel's legacy is indelible. His efforts to improve the London police force revolutionized law enforcement in Britain and set the stage for the modern police force. Additionally, his advocacy for Free Trade played a crucial role in shaping the economic landscape of the country. Tragically, Peel's life was cut short on 29th June 1850 when he was thrown from his horse and sustained fatal injuries. His untimely death at the age of 62 left a profound impact on the political landscape of the time. This poignant image captures a moment in history when a visionary leader passionately debated the issues of the day, leaving a lasting impact on the course of British history. This image is a historical record and is not intended for commercial use. It is available from Mary Evans Prints Online.
