EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration on Page 234 of Curious Creatures in Zoology, published in 1890 by John Ashton, showcases the enigmatic figure of a Sea-horse. The Sea-horse, a fascinating equine creature of the underwater realm, is depicted here with its distinctive elongated snout, curled tail, and the appearance of riding on the back of a host fish. John Ashton, the illustrator, masterfully captures the mythical allure of this animal, which has long been a subject of curiosity and wonder. Despite its equine features, the Sea-horse is not a mammal, but rather a bony fish belonging to the Actinopterygii order and the family Syngnathidae. Its unique physical attributes, such as its hippocampus-like body shape and the ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings, have fueled the belief that it might be a mythical creature or even a mammal. Ashton's illustration highlights the Perissodactyl, or odd-toed, nature of the Sea-horse, which is a characteristic shared with the horse and rhinoceros. However, it is not an equid, nor does it belong to the Perissodactyla order, which includes horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs. Instead, it is an Eutherian, a mammal that develops inside its mother's womb, and is classified within the Hippoidea suborder, which also includes hippos. This illustration, with its intricate details and lifelike quality, continues to inspire curiosity and fascination, reminding us of the wonders of the natural world and the importance of preserving its mysteries.
