Roscoff, Finistere, Brittany, France - Ancient Fig Tree

Brittany, France - Ancient Fig Tree in a convent garden at Roscoff, Finistere, dating back to 1610. The expanse of branches is supported by rowsof grante props. Its extremely numerous figs were sold in all the neighbouring markets. Tragically, the tree was cut down in 1987 during a modernisation spree - a horticultural tragedy in my book, especially as it was removed for the construction of a (non-defunct) car park. Date: circa 1910

1610 Bretagne Breton Brittany Canopy Convent Figuier Finistere Props Secular Supported Supports Years Roscoff

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the ancient Fig Tree in the convent garden of Roscoff, Finistere, Brittany, France, dating back to the year 1610. The tree's extensive canopy, supported by rows of granite props, once provided shelter to countless figs that were sold in the neighboring markets. The Fig Tree of Roscoff, a living testament to the rich history of the region, was estimated to be over 300 years old and was considered a Breton cultural treasure. The image, estimated to be taken around 1910, showcases the tree's grandeur and the intricate system of supports that kept its massive branches upright. Its figs, renowned for their exceptional quality, were a source of pride and sustenance for the local community. Unfortunately, in 1987, during a modernization spree, the ancient Fig Tree was tragically cut down to make way for a car park. This horticultural tragedy marked the loss of a significant piece of Brittany's heritage and history. The Fig Tree of Roscoff, a 17th-century figuier secular, stood as a symbol of the region's rich past and the interconnectedness of its people and their traditions. Its removal serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
