1807 1873 Arctic Discoverer Explorer Mcclure Northwest Passage Mesurier

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Robert John Le Mesurier McClure (1807-1873), a distinguished naval officer and explorer, is depicted in this photograph. McClure is best known for his role in the discovery of the Northwest Passage, a long-sought-after sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. Born on February 31, 1807, in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland, McClure joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks. His first Arctic expedition was in 1850, aboard the HMS Investigator, in search of the lost Franklin Expedition. Although unsuccessful in locating the missing explorers, McClure's determination and perseverance paved the way for future success. In 1852, McClure embarked on his most famous expedition, commanding the HMS Fox and HMS Intrepid. After a grueling journey fraught with danger and hardships, McClure's ships became the first to navigate the Northwest Passage from east to west, reaching Victoria Strait on August 25, 1854. This achievement was a significant milestone in Arctic exploration and opened up new possibilities for trade and communication between Europe and Asia. McClure's accomplishments were recognized with numerous accolades, including a knighthood in 1859. He continued to serve in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1868. McClure passed away on February 23, 1873, leaving behind a rich legacy in the annals of Arctic exploration and maritime history.
