EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, lies beside his downed Nieuport 28 aircraft behind enemy lines in France during the First World War. Born on December 15, 1897, Quentin was an adventurous spirit who followed in his father's footsteps by joining the military and seeking excitement in the skies as a pilot. He enlisted in the American Expeditionary Force and was assigned to the prestigious 95th Aero Squadron. On July 14, 1918, during a dogfight with German forces, Quentin's plane was hit and crashed behind enemy lines near the village of Champlieu. Despite being mortally wounded, he refused medical attention and chose to remain with his aircraft, rather than abandon it and potentially reveal his position to the enemy. The photograph captures the young lieutenant in his final moments, lying beside his beloved Nieuport 28, a testament to his bravery and dedication to his country. Quentin Roosevelt's tragic death at the age of 20 made headlines around the world, and he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism. He is buried on the spot where he fell, overlooking the French countryside, a reminder of the sacrifices made by young men and women during the Great War. This haunting image of Quentin Roosevelt and his aircraft serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring bond between a father and his son.
