Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt (1897-1918), youngest son of the former President of the United States, lying beside his aircraft (a Nieuport 28) behind German lines in France during the First World War. He belonged to the 95th Aero Squadron of the American Expeditionary Force. He was buried on the spot where he fell. Date: 14 July 1918

Born on December 15, 1897, Quentin was an adventurous spirit who followed in his father's footsteps by joining the military and seeking excitement in the skies as a pilot. He enlisted in the American Expeditionary Force and was assigned to the prestigious 95th Aero Squadron. On July 14, 1918, during a dogfight with German forces, Quentin's plane was hit and crashed behind enemy lines near the village of Champlieu. Despite being mortally wounded, he refused medical attention and chose to remain with his aircraft, rather than abandon it and potentially reveal his position to the enemy. The photograph captures the young lieutenant in his final moments, lying beside his beloved Nieuport 28, a testament to his bravery and dedication to his country.
