EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 53 from Volume 4 of Alfred Russel Wallace's Notebook: A Nineteenth Century Illustration of Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, the Sailfin Pleco Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), a renowned naturalist and co-discoverer of the theory of evolution through natural selection, meticulously documented his observations of various species during his extensive travels in the Amazon Basin between 1848 and 1860. This intricately detailed pencil drawing, found in Plate 53 of Volume 4 of Wallace's notebooks, depicts Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, commonly known as the Sailfin Pleco or Sailfin Armored Catfish. The Sailfin Pleco is a member of the Loricariidae family, which includes over 1,200 species of armored catfishes. This particular specimen is easily recognizable by its distinctive sail-like dorsal fin, which can reach up to twice the length of its body. The fish's body is covered in bony plates, providing it with excellent protection against predators. The intricate pattern on the fish's body, visible in the illustration, is a result of the overlapping scales and plates. The fish's coloration varies from light brown to dark gray, with numerous small, dark spots covering its body. The Sailfin Pleco is a bottom-dwelling fish, and its elongated, flat body and powerful suction discs on its mouth enable it to effectively navigate the riverbed and feed on detritus and algae. Wallace's notebooks, filled with thousands of sketches, observations, and notes, are a testament to his dedication and passion for the natural world. This illustration of the Sailfin Pleco provides a unique glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating species and the meticulous work of one of the greatest naturalists of the nineteenth century.
