North American YF-100A Super Sabre 52-5754
North American YF-100A Super Sabre 52-5754 (msn 180-1), the first prototype F-100 with test pilot Joseph Walker posing in the cockpit, probably at Edwards Air Force Base. Joseph Walker was killed when the F-104 Starfighter he was flying was caught in wing-tip vortices from the number2 XB-70, dragging his f-104 over the wing of the XB-70 and removing its vertical stabilisers. Joe walker was killed almost instantly but only one of the XB-70 flight crew survived his ejection. Date: circa 1958

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the first prototype of the North American YF-100A Super Sabre, serial number 52-5754 (msn 180-1), with test pilot Joseph Walker proudly seated in the cockpit. The image was most likely taken at Edwards Air Force Base around 1958. The YF-100A was a significant development in aviation history, representing the United States' first operational all-weather, supersonic interceptor. Tragically, just a few years after this photograph was taken, on November 29, 1966, Walker would lose his life during a high-speed research flight. While testing the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter at supersonic speeds, Walker's aircraft was caught in the wing-tip vortices of the number two XB-70, causing the F-104 to collide with the XB-70 and shear off both of its vertical stabilizers. Walker was killed instantly, while only one of the XB-70's crew members survived his ejection. The North American YF-100A Super Sabre remains an iconic figure in aeronautical history, representing the cutting edge of aviation technology during the Cold War era. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the brave test pilots who pushed the boundaries of flight, often at great personal risk.
