EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray 124587 (msn 7464), the second prototype of the F4D Skyray, is seen at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The Skyray is equipped with a prototype General Electric CF700, an aft-fan version of the CJ610-J85 turbojet, mounted on its starboard under-wing pylon. In the background, the RB-66 test-bed for the CJ805 aft-fan turbofan engine is visible. This historic image dates back to the late 1950s. On October 3, 1953, the Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray 124587 set a new world air speed record. Later, in 1955, it was assigned to Edwards Air Force Base for tests. In 1956, the aircraft was loaned to General Electric for engine development, specifically for testing the J79 and CJ805 and CF700 engines. On October 19, 1960, the Douglas XF4D-1 Skyray 124587 was struck off charge. After its military service, it was displayed at the Museum of Armament and Technology at NAF China Lake, California. However, the current disposition of the aircraft is uncertain. This photograph captures a significant moment in aviation history, with the Skyray being a crucial test-bed for advanced engine technology. The CF700 engine, mounted on the underwing pylon, represents a significant step forward in jet engine design, with its aft-fan configuration. The RB-66 test-bed in the background further underscores the innovative spirit of the era, as it was also a test-bed for the CJ805 turbofan engine, which would later power various military and civilian aircraft.
