EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored woodcut print depicts a Persian mullah, or priest, dressed in traditional attire from the 19th century. The mullah is adorned in a turban, a tall, conical headdress that is a symbol of religious and scholarly authority in Persian culture. The turban is intricately decorated with gold embroidery and embellished with a long, flowing piece of fabric. The mullah's embroidered cape, or pheran, is also richly decorated with gold and vibrant colors, reflecting the intricate and ornate nature of Persian art. The cape is lined with fur, providing warmth and insulation in the cooler climates of Persia. Beneath the cape, the mullah wears a lined coat, or chubbeh, which is also adorned with gold embroidery and intricate designs. He completes his outfit with traditional slippers, or zorghi, and carries a long, wooden stick, or lath, for support. This print is from Auguste Wahlen's "Manners, Customs and Costumes of all the People of the World," published in Brussels in 1845. The work was produced by the renowned French publisher Jean Francois Nicolas Loumyer and is considered a seminal work in the study of global fashion history. The meticulous attention to detail in this woodcut print offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional clothing and customs of Persia during the 19th century.
