EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a grandiose masterpiece of Hellenistic art, stands as a testament to the cultural richness of ancient Pergamon in Asia Minor. Commissioned by Eumenes II Soter around 164-156 BC, this monumental structure is a fusion of marble and limestone, adorned with intricate carvings and reliefs that depict mythological tales and battles. One of the most captivating sections of the altar is the South Frieze, which features a scene from the mythological battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants, known as Gigantomachy. Among the depicted figures, the goddess Rhea or Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods, rides triumphantly on a lion. She is accompanied by Adrasteia, a goddess of vengeance, and two unidentified personages. Cybele, often depicted with a lion as her mount, was a significant deity in the ancient world, revered for her protective and nurturing qualities. The image of her riding on a lion, with her outstretched hand holding a bow and arrow, conveys her role as a powerful warrior goddess. The Pergamon Altar, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, is a remarkable artifact from the Hellenistic period. Its intricate carvings and mythological narratives continue to inspire awe and fascination among scholars, art enthusiasts, and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient civilizations.
