EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Plate XXXVIII of A Monograph of the Felidae, or Family of the Cats, published in 1833 by the renowned American naturalist Daniel Giraud Elliot. The plate features two magnificent animals of the American continent: the Panthera onca, or jaguar, and the Tapirus indicus, or Asian tapir. The jaguar, depicted in the foreground, is the largest cat species in the Americas and is characterized by its powerful build, distinctive black spots, and prominent muscles. Jaguars are apex predators and are well-adapted to a variety of habitats, from the dense forests of Central America to the grasslands of South America. They are opportunistic hunters, preying on a wide range of animals, from peccaries and capybaras to caimans and even anacondas. In the background, the Asian tapir, with its distinctive elongated snout and large, round ears, can be seen. This large herbivorous mammal is the largest living tapir species and is found in the forests of Central and South America, as well as in some parts of Southern Asia. Tapirs are important seed dispersers and play a crucial role in maintaining the health and diversity of their forest habitats. The illustration was produced using hand-coloured lithographs from watercolour drawings by the skilled artists Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smit. The intricate details and lifelike quality of the artwork provide a stunning representation of these two iconic animals and offer a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century.
