Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Mary Evans Picture Library
The Prince and Princess of Wales and Dowager of Russia
The Prince and Princess of Wales (Edward VII & Alexandra of Denmark). The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (Albert Edward; 9 November 1841 a" 6 May 1910). He was Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne for almost 60 years. During the long reign of his mother, he was largely excluded from political power, and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties, and represented Britain on visits abroad, seen here on a visit to Copenhagen. The Princess is seen standing behind him, and her sister, the Dowager Czaritsa of Russia, is seated by his side. Alexandra's style of dress and bearing were copied by fashion-conscious women. Date: 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time during the golden age of royalty, featuring the Prince and Princess of Wales, Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark, along with the Dowager Czaritsa of Russia, during their visit to Copenhagen in the year 1900. The Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, was the heir to the British throne for nearly six decades. Known for his fashionable and leisured lifestyle, he was largely excluded from political power during his mother's long reign. The Princess of Wales, Alexandra, was a Danish princess and the daughter of Christian IX of Denmark. Her elegant style and bearing were widely admired and copied by fashion-conscious women of the time. In this image, she stands behind her husband, the Prince of Wales, as they engage in diplomatic duties during their visit to the Danish capital. Seated by the Prince's side is the Dowager Czaritsa of Russia, Alexandra's sister, who adds an air of regal sophistication to the scene. The photograph provides a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the royal world, as well as the important role that diplomacy and representation played in the political landscape of the late Victorian era.
