EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the brutal realities of the Eastern Front during World War II, with a damaged Soviet KV-1 Shielded heavy tank lying abandoned after being knocked out by German anti-tank fire. The KV-1 Shielded was a variation of the standard KV-1 tank, named after Soviet defence commissar and politician Kliment Voroshilov. To enhance its already formidable armor, additional armor was riveted onto the turret and parts of the hull. The extra armor can be clearly seen on the side of the turret in this image. The year was 1941, and the tide of the war had turned against the Soviet Union. The German military, with their superior tactics and weaponry, were making significant gains. This KV-1 tank, like many others, met its demise at the hands of the invading German forces. The image shows a German soldier inspecting the damage, providing a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict. The KV-1 tank, a symbol of Soviet military might, lay helpless, its once impenetrable armor breached by German anti-tank fire. The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, from which this photograph is taken, is a valuable historical resource, offering a unique insight into the events of the past. The collection spans various themes, including aviation, aeronautical engineering, and military history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the importance of military innovation and adaptation in the face of adversity.
