He served firstly as prime minister, then as president, and finally as king of Albania, until an Italian invasion in April 1939 forced him into exile. This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the history of Albania, as King Zog I (Ahmet Muhtar Zogolli, 1895-1961) is seen here with his consort Geraldine Margit Apponyi de Nagy-Appony (1915-2002) and his sisters, in the year of his exile from his native country in 1939. King Zog I, who had served firstly as prime minister, then as president, and finally as king of Albania, was forced into exile following an Italian invasion. The regal couple, dressed in elegant attire, exude an air of resilience and determination, despite the impending turmoil. King Zog I's sisters, who are also present in the photograph, offer a sense of familial support and solidarity. The image, taken in the late 1930s, is a poignant reminder of a time when the fate of a nation hung in the balance, and its monarch and his family faced an uncertain future in exile.
