EDITORS COMMENTS
Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco (1465-1538), also known as Fadrique II, was a prominent figure in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Iberian Peninsula. He served as the 4th Admiral of Castile and was the Lord of Medina de Rioseco. This detailed portrait of Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco is an illustration taken from the "Cronica General de Espana," a historical work published in Asturias and Leon in 1867. Born in the late 15th century, Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco played a significant role in the Castilian military during the reigns of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. He was a skilled military commander who participated in several important battles, including the Battle of Granada, which marked the end of Muslim rule in Spain in 1492. Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco was also the Governor of Melgar and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The image shows Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco wearing full armor, complete with a bearded face and a helmet adorned with the crest of the Velasco family. During the Revolt of the Comuneros in the early 16th century, Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco remained loyal to the crown and played a crucial role in suppressing the rebellion. He continued to serve the Spanish Empire until his death in 1538. This lithographic print, created by Letre, is a modern representation of Fadrique Enriquez de Velasco's portrait from the 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the era of the nobleman, showcasing his regal attire, armor, and the power and influence he held during the formative years of the modern period in Europe.
