EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), a pivotal figure in world history as the navigator and colonist who opened the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. Born in the Italian city of Genoa, Columbus was determined to reach the East Indies by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. After years of lobbying for support, he secured funding from the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. Columbus's first voyage led to the discovery of the Americas, and he is credited with bringing the New World to the attention of Europe. This engraving, created in the 19th century, is a later coloration of an original 1883 print housed in the Museo Militar in Madrid, Spain. The image shows Columbus in the prime of his life, with a serious expression and an unyielding gaze. He is depicted as a man of the sea, dressed in the clothing of the time – a long, flowing robe and a wide-brimmed hat. In his hand, he holds a compass, a symbol of his navigational skills. The background includes a map of the world, with Europe, Africa, and the Americas clearly visible. Columbus's legacy is complex and controversial. While he is celebrated as a hero for his role in opening up a new world, his voyages also led to the widespread exploitation and displacement of indigenous peoples and the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade. Nevertheless, this engraving captures the essence of a man who dared to challenge the known world and forever changed the course of history.
