EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the tense moment during the Dreyfus Affair in France, when Colonel Henry and Major Picquart, two prominent military figures, crossed swords in a duel inspired by Émile Zola's intervention. The Dreyfus Affair, a major political scandal that shook France in the late 19th century, began when Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was wrongfully convicted of treason. Zola, a renowned French novelist, published an open letter in the newspaper L'Aurore on January 13, 1898, titled "J'Accuse...!", in which he accused the military establishment of anti-Semitism and a cover-up in the Dreyfus case. The letter sparked a national uproar, and Zola became a symbol of truth and justice in the eyes of many. However, the military establishment was not amused. Colonel Henry, the commander of the military school where Dreyfus had been convicted, saw Zola's intervention as a personal affront. He challenged Zola to a duel, but Zola wisely declined. Instead, he sent Picquart, a military investigator who had uncovered new evidence exonerating Dreyfus, to take his place. This print depicts the moment when Henry and Picquart, facing each other with drawn swords, came to a standstill. The duel never took place, as the French government intervened and forbade the duel from taking place. The incident further fueled public outrage against the military establishment and brought more attention to the injustice of the Dreyfus case. The print captures the intensity and drama of this pivotal moment in French history, as two powerful figures confront each other in a duel inspired by the intervention of a literary giant.
