This image depicts Richard Roberts, an eccentric yet intriguing figure of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, who was widely known as the Cambrian Linguist. Born in Wales around 1780, Roberts was a self-taught linguist who claimed to have discovered a new language, which he called 'Cambrian.' He believed that this language had been spoken by the ancient Britons and that it was the key to understanding their history and culture. Roberts was an enigmatic character, known for his unconventional ways and wild theories. He lived a reclusive life in a small cottage in the Welsh countryside, where he spent long hours studying ancient texts and deciphering the supposed signs and symbols of the Cambrian language. He claimed to have translated various works into Cambrian, including the Bible and Shakespeare's plays. Despite the skepticism of many scholars and intellectuals, Roberts' work attracted a following, and he gained a certain notoriety in academic circles. Some even traveled to Wales to meet him and learn more about his discoveries. Roberts' eccentricities, however, often overshadowed his linguistic achievements. He was known to wear a long, flowing white beard and a tattered cloak, and he would often speak in a cryptic and poetic manner.
