EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite glass model of Ommastrephes sagittatus, commonly known as the arrow squid, is a breathtaking creation from the Blaschka glassworks, housed at the Natural History Museum in London. Produced by Leopold (1822-1895) and Rudolf Blaschka (1857-1939) during the late 19th century, this intricate work of art showcases the beauty and complexity of this deep-sea cephalopod. The Blaschka brothers, renowned for their exceptional skill in creating lifelike glass models of marine invertebrates, meticulously crafted each detail of this squid, from its delicate tentacles to the intricate patterns on its body. The model features the squid in a dynamic pose, as if in mid-flight, with its arms outstretched and its body curved gracefully. Ommastrephes sagittatus is a member of the Ommastrephidae family, also known as the flying squids, due to their ability to propel themselves through the water by jet propulsion. This squid is characterized by its long, slender body and its eight arms, each adorned with two rows of suckers. The model captures the fragile, ethereal quality of this elusive deep-sea creature, which is rarely seen by humans due to its preference for the dark, cold waters of the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans. The Blaschka glass models, which include over 4,000 specimens, are considered to be some of the most beautiful and intricate works of art in the history of natural history. They offer a unique perspective on the natural world, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of marine life in a way that was not possible during the Victorian era when they were created. This model of Ommastrephes sagittatus is a testament to the brothers' unwavering dedication to capturing the essence of the natural world in glass.
