EDITORS COMMENTS
Herakles, also known as Hercules, is depicted in this print as he boldly faces the formidable three-headed hound, Cerberus. As the twelfth and final labor of his legendary twelve labors, Herakles was tasked by King Eurystheus to descend into the Underworld and capture Cerberus, the fearsome watchdog guarding the gate to the realm of the dead. With unyielding determination and strength, Herakles seized Cerberus, proving his worthiness as a true hero. Yet, the tale does not end with Herakles' triumphant return from the Underworld. Upon bringing Cerberus before King Eurystheus, he was met with a surprising revelation. Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, had need of Cerberus as his watchdog and demanded the hero's swift return. Herakles, ever the obedient servant of the gods, complied and released Cerberus back to his rightful place, thus completing his final labor and securing his place in mythological history. This evocative print, showcasing the powerful encounter between Herakles and Cerberus, is a testament to the enduring legacy of classical mythology. The intricate details of the artwork bring the story to life, transporting us back to a time when gods and heroes walked the earth and the boundaries between the living and the dead were blurred. A must-have for any collection devoted to mythology, ancient history, or the art of the classical world.
