EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the ancient Arch of Janus in Rome, Italy, stands proudly against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. Dating back to the early 4th century CE, this quadrifrons triumphal arch is a remarkable relic of Rome's rich history. The Arch of Janus, located at the northeastern limit of the Forum Boarium, was set up at a crossroads near the Velabrum, over the Cloaca Maxima drain that connected the Forum to the River Tiber. Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, and endings, was often depicted as having two faces, one looking to the future and the other to the past. This architectural masterpiece, with its four arches and two faces, was dedicated to Janus, symbolizing the god's role as the guardian of beginnings and endings, as well as the god of war and peace. The Arch of Janus is a testament to the ingenuity and artistic prowess of the ancient Romans. Its intricate carvings and ornate details have survived the test of time, transporting us back to a period when Rome was the center of the known world. This photograph, taken in 1901, captures the essence of Rome's ancient grandeur and the enduring allure of its history. The Arch of Janus, with its timeless beauty and historical significance, continues to be a must-see attraction for visitors to Rome and a source of inspiration for artists, historians, and scholars alike.
