EDITORS COMMENTS
Carved Ivory Head Rest: A Glimpse into the Treasures of Tutankhamun's Tomb This exquisite ivory head rest, dating back to circa 1925, is a captivating artifact that once graced the grave of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, Tutankhamun. The central pillar of this intricately carved piece is dominated by the figure of the god Shu, the deity of the air, who is depicted kneeling and holding aloft the curved head support with upraised arms. The importance of Shu's role in protection is emphasized by the hieroglyphic signs for 'protection' looped over each of his shoulders. Atop the base, two magnificent couchant lions are carved almost in the round, adding an air of regality and power to this already impressive piece. The lions, symbolizing strength and courage, have been a common motif in Egyptian art since the Old Kingdom. This ivory head rest is a testament to the artistic prowess and cultural richness of ancient Egypt. It is believed that such head rests were used to support the head of the deceased during mummification and in the afterlife. The intricate carvings on this head rest, as well as the other treasures discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb, provide valuable insights into the religious beliefs, artistic styles, and daily life of the ancient Egyptians. This stunning piece, with its intricate details and historical significance, is a must-see for anyone with an interest in ancient civilizations or Egyptian art. It is a reminder of the enduring allure of the mysteries of the past and the beauty and sophistication of ancient Egyptian culture.
