EDITORS COMMENTS
Wild Lettuce, also known as Bitter Lettuce or Lactuca virosa, is depicted in this beautiful chromolithograph from Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst, published in Germany in 1887. This botanical illustration by Walther Muller showcases the plant's intricate details, from its jagged leaves with serrated edges to its distinctive tall stem and milky latex. Wild Lettuce is native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, and was traditionally used in herbal medicine for its sedative and analgesic properties. The plant contains lactucin and lactucopicrin, which are believed to be responsible for its calming effects. The milky sap of the plant was used to make a tea or tincture, which was consumed to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, and muscle pain. The plant's bitter taste and milky sap gave rise to its alternative name, Bitter Lettuce. Despite its name, Wild Lettuce is not related to the lettuce commonly consumed as a salad green. Instead, it is a member of the daisy family, Asteraceae. This chromolithograph is a testament to the intrigue and importance of medicinal plants in historical times, and serves as a reminder of the rich botanical knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Today, Wild Lettuce continues to be studied for its potential therapeutic uses, and is available in various forms as a dietary supplement.
