EDITORS COMMENTS
View of the Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna, 1822: A Glimpse into the Imperial Past This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Alexandre de Labordes' "Voyage pittoresque en Autriche," 1822, offers a captivating view of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. The main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, this magnificent edifice stands proudly against the backdrop of a walled city, its towers reaching for the heavens. The image, produced by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844, invites us to step back in time. Peasants in traditional attire can be seen working in the nearby wheat field, while horseback riders, clad in coats of arms and banners, make their way through the landscape. The palace, with its golden bulla (seal) and illuminated manuscript-inspired decorations, exudes an air of regal grandeur. The various objects and symbols depicted - mitres, cloaks, and coats of arms - serve as reminders of the kings, princes, counts, barons, and archbishops who once called this imperial castle their home. The scene is further enriched by the presence of a miniature of Wenceslaus IV, the last king of Bohemia, and his related objects, including the golden bull and aurea bulla. These intricately detailed illustrations offer a glimpse into the historical fashion and rich cultural heritage of the time, making this engraving a valuable historical document and an essential addition to any collection focusing on European history, fashion, or art.
