EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Touch-me-not balsam, Impatiens noli-tangere, also known as Balsamina noli-tangere, Balsamina impaziente, Erba impaziente, or the Touch-me-not plant. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Stanghi and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The Touch-me-not balsam is a small shrub or tree, native to tropical Africa and Asia. Its name derives from the plant's unique reaction to touch: when a leaf or fruit is touched, it explodes, releasing seeds. This plant is not to be confused with the unrelated Touch-me-not, Impatiens balsamina, commonly known as Touch-me-not impatiens or Busy Lizzie. The Touch-me-not balsam has historically been used for medicinal purposes, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as Camellia sinensis var. thea bohea, or tea nero. The plant's leaves and fruits are rich in tannins and caffeine, making them a valuable source for tea production. The tea made from this plant is known for its unique, slightly bitter taste and dark color. This beautiful engraving showcases the intricate details of the Touch-me-not balsam's leaves, fruits, and stems, providing a glimpse into the botanical wonders of the natural world. Turpin's masterful use of stipple engraving techniques adds depth and texture to the image, making it a true work of art. The illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the plant kingdom and the important role that botanical illustrations play in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
