EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by C. Loeffler, published in Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History (Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stände) in 1841, showcases an impressive array of tortoise and turtle species. The image includes the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca), also known as the Spur-thighed tortoise, with its distinctive keeled scutes and distinctive markings. The land tortoise (Cinyxis) is also depicted, a small, brown species native to Africa. Two European species are represented: the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), with its circular, orange-bordered plates, and the Matamata turtle (Chelus fimbriata), a large, armored South American species with a distinctive, upturned snout. The Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox) and Nile softshell turtle (Trionyx triunguis) are shown, both characterized by their elongated, paddle-like snouts. The endangered green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) are also featured, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts for these magnificent creatures. The diversity of tortoises and turtles is truly astounding, with each species displaying unique adaptations to their environments. This print serves as a reminder of the rich natural history that exists within our world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
