Leatherback Turtles Collection

Leatherback turtles are the largest of all sea turtles and are found in all oceans except the Arctic. They have a unique leathery carapace that is composed of a mosaic of small bones covered by skin and oily flesh. This helps them to dive deeper than any other turtle species, up to depths of 4,200 feet. Leatherbacks feed mainly on jellyfish but also eat other soft-bodied animals such as squid and fish. They migrate long distances between nesting sites and foraging grounds, often crossing entire ocean basins. Leatherbacks are listed as endangered due to overharvesting of eggs, entanglement in fishing gear, habitat destruction, climate change, and pollution. Conservation efforts include protecting nesting beaches from development and reducing plastic pollution in the ocean which can be mistaken for food by these turtles.
