EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases two fascinating underwater creatures: the Spot-fin Porcupinefish, Diodon hystrix, and the Pufferfish, Lagocephalus lagocephalus. The Porcupinefish, also known as the Spotted Porcupinefish or the Unicornfish, is depicted in its disarmed state, with its spines retracted, revealing its unique, orbicular body shape and distinctive spots. The Pufferfish, on the other hand, is shown in its inflated state, a defense mechanism used to deter predators. The Porcupinefish belongs to the Diodontidae family, while the Pufferfish is a member of the Tetraodontidae family. Both species were popular additions to the Wunderkammern or Cabinets of Curiosities during the 18th century, showcasing the natural world's wonders. This illustration was drawn and engraved by Georg Wolfgang Knorr for his Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print highlight the beauty and intrigue of these enigmatic marine creatures.
