EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir Richard Steele, a prominent figure in English literature and journalism during the early 18th century. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1672, Steele rose to prominence as a writer and editor, penning essays under the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff. He is best known for his collaborative work with Joseph Addison on the influential periodicals The Tatler and The Spectator, published in London from 1709 to 1712. The Tatler, with its witty and satirical commentary on society and manners, quickly gained a large and devoted following. Steele and Addison used their platform to shape public opinion, tackling topics such as morality, politics, and literature. The Spectator, which succeeded The Tatler, continued in the same vein, offering a weekly dose of insightful essays and thought-provoking commentary. Steele's impact on English literature and journalism was profound, and his influence can be seen in the works of later writers such as Samuel Johnson and Jonathan Swift. In addition to his literary pursuits, Steele also had a successful career in politics, serving as a Member of Parliament and holding various positions in the government. This portrait, taken in 1875, captures the wisdom and gravitas of a man who helped shape the cultural and intellectual landscape of his time.
