EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Verico, after Giuseppe Bramati, showcases an intriguing collection of medieval shields and bucklers from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. The engraving transports us back in time to the era of chivalry, warfare, and romance. In the center, a round buckler, or rondella (1), is depicted, its curved surface designed to protect the wielder's off-hand. To its left, an oval buckler (2) is shown, which offered more coverage than its round counterpart, making it a popular choice among infantry. Two infantry shields are displayed: the targe (3), a large, flat, circular shield, and the infantry shield (4), which is rectangular in shape and larger than the bucklers. The targe was typically used by foot soldiers in close combat, while the infantry shield provided additional protection for the bearer's body. On the right side of the engraving, a cavalry shield (5) is illustrated, which was larger and more substantial than the infantry shields. Designed to protect the rider and his mount in battle, it was an essential piece of equipment for mounted warriors. Finally, a massive shield used in a siege (6) is depicted at the bottom of the engraving. These shields were often used by defenders to protect walls, gates, or other fortifications from enemy attacks during sieges. This remarkable illustration offers a glimpse into the diverse range of shields and bucklers used during medieval times, from the intimate round bucklers to the imposing siege shields. The handcoloured copperplate engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colours, adds an extra layer of allure to this fascinating glimpse into the past.
