EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Shamarpa, Regent of Tibet: Brother of the Panchen Lama, Lobsang Palden Yeshe" This image depicts Shamarpa, the Regent of Tibet, and the brother of the Panchen Lama, Lobsang Palden Yeshe. The engraving, created by Lieutenant Samuel Davis from Captain Samuel Turner's Account of an Embassy to the Court of the Teshoo Lama in Tibet in 1800, is a beautiful example of 19th-century copperplate engraving. The artwork was further enhanced by the skilled hand of Lazaretti, as part of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti) published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. Shamarpa, also known as the Red Hat Lama, is an essential figure in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He is the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage and acts as the regent when the Panchen Lama is young or absent. In this image, Shamarpa is depicted wearing the traditional red hat and robes of his position, signifying his spiritual and temporal authority. His serene expression and regal bearing convey a sense of wisdom and power. The Panchen Lama, who is the second most prominent figure in the Gelugpa tradition, is Shamarpa's younger brother. Together, they form a crucial partnership in the spiritual and political leadership of Tibet. This image offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these influential figures during a time when Tibet was opening up to the outside world. The intricate details of the engraving, from the intricate folds of their robes to the ornate patterns on their hats, showcase the exceptional artistry of the time. The vibrant colors added by Lazaretti further bring the image to life, making it a captivating work of art that transports us to a different time and place.
