EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pedretti after an illustration by A. Carie Baron for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three distinctive bird species: the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), the African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus), and the Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens). The Scarlet Ibis, also known as the Iberide or Ibis Rouge, is a vibrant, long-legged wading bird native to the Caribbean and Central and South America. Its brilliant scarlet plumage and long, downward-curved beak make it a striking sight. The African Sacred Ibis, or Ibis Sacre, is a large, sacred bird in ancient Egypt, where it was revered as a symbol of the god Thoth. This bird, with its distinctive downward-curved beak and long legs, is native to sub-Saharan Africa. The Candytuft, or Iberis sempervirens, is a low-growing, evergreen plant native to Europe and the Mediterranean. Its small, white, five-petaled flowers bloom in clusters and add a splash of color to the landscape. The intricate details of the birds and the candytuft are beautifully rendered in this hand-colored steel engraving, which showcases the artistry and skill of the illustrator and engraver. The natural history of these species is captured in a visually stunning and educational manner, making this print a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology.
