EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts two distinctive wading birds, the African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) and the White Ibis (Eudocimus albus). The image is taken from Théodore-Henri Marie Antoine Rousseau Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The African Sacred Ibis, also known as the Dung Ibis, is native to the Nile Valley in Africa. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive downward-curved beak and long, slender legs. This bird was revered by the ancient Egyptians, who believed that it was a symbol of the god Thoth. The ibis was mummified and buried with the dead, and its image was often depicted in Egyptian art. The White Ibis, on the other hand, is found in wetlands throughout the Americas, from the southern United States to South America. It is characterized by its long, curved beak and white plumage. This bird is an important wading bird in its habitats, feeding on a variety of aquatic organisms. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this handcoloured lithograph. The delicate shading and precise lines bring the feathers and textures of the birds to life, making this a stunning addition to any ornithology collection. The image is a testament to the skill and artistry of the lithographer, as well as the natural beauty of these fascinating birds.
